Tesla Manaf Effendi 29 August 1987
Composer| Guitarist| Music Producer

Influenced by the peculiar type of music in classic, contemporary, jazz and progressive rock—under the name of Krzystof Penderecky, John Adams, Steve Reich, Gyorgy Ligeti, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Pat Metheny, YES, ELP and Gentle Giant—Tesla Manaf, who grew up in a family with no background music but has diverse taste, particularly from his father, has given him a liberation to utilized the time and space to developed his skill up to 9 hours per day—ignoring the school hours at the moment. No wonder the tiny Tesla were able to recorded his name as a winner at many festivals award by Yamaha Music specialized in guitar classic, which has accompanied him until the age 19th, the moment when he opened the new chapter by learning Jazz after escaping to Bandung, where the resolution of his life to be a professional artist in music field has declared.
In these five years period of his artistic career, he arouse the achievement he got back then, mentioned as the best new comer at the one of the oldest jazz festival of the world, Jazz Goes to Campus Festival and selected for nomination in reader’s poll at the prestigious jazz magazine, Downbeat, in four nomination; Guitarist, Composer, Jazz Album and Jazz Artist.
Along with those accomplishment, New York Based Music Label, Moonjune Records, owned by Leonardo Pavkovic, has got attracted by Tesla’s captivating charm that he represented in each movement on his music by being his helping hand on distribution for his newest album. The world consent to be the same mind with Leonardos objectives. Many reviews Tesla got from his international debut self-named Album “Tesla Manaf” (2015) such as Progbrasil (Brazil), CultureJazz (France), Kakereco (Japan), DistritoJazz (Spain) and AllaboutJazz (US).
Making music with sensitivity to surroundings formed personally before reaching the universal desirable result is his leading principle. Music as a generosity how he develop his humanistic sight. He embraces the experience he lived by, whether it’s harrowing or fortifying, he gets to translated it into notes, designing the plots and movement, convey it in wholehearted rendition.
This perspective is quite essential for being an artist. Performing at Lanjong Art Festival 2015 has given him the chance to turned up this internal ingenuity that he gained the same in art residency project in Babayan Culture House, Cappadocia, Turkey at November 2015.
For him, live is a story, being alive is how to retell it. He shows his intention by engaging himself as performer and composer to the society of music industry, attentively in sound engineering, music album producing and film scoring. And being the leading man on the stage, he gather the chemistry by any collaboration set he could held, in some way ensemble, traditional instruments with culture mixture and acoustic format could provide.
As yet, he enhanced his domain by two remarkable album, The 3rd Album of his life; “It’s All Yours” (2011) ft. Mahagotra Ganesha—a traditional Balinese gamelan ensemble, which had given contribution to describe the dialogue among human, God and nature. And the last, “A Man’s Relationship with His Fragile Area” (2014) which has lead his presence advanced toward our extent, “Most definitely one of the best CDs of the decade forwards and backwards,” as once has sentenced by Accoustic Music, Netherland.
Grace Tesla: Self Title (2010)
The album told about the experimented souls that absorbed the essence of memories and translate it into melodies and sounds. Some of the results are misinterpreted by the listeners just because of the unusual form for music trends at the moment, this album could be seen as the first and the most poorly digested by others probably until this present. It was produced independently and having some of technical problems within, but this is my first album which has represented well for what has had to be shouted and what has had to be written.
Ivan & Tesla: This DIG (2011)
Many kind of layering of the melodic atmosphere has shown in this album. It carried the way of fusion jazz along with each player’s specialities. Most of them are cheerful and dynamic themes of songs, but it wasn’t telling about happiness. They were telling about their own struggle, with a playful such a trance they were enjoying the euphoria of experimenting the music.
The players who armed with guitar, keyboard, bass and drum recorded themselves in a quite small rented room and the result was really satisfying. Good enough to convinced themselves to keep making artworks.
Tesla Manaf feat. Mahagotra Ganesha It’s All Yours (2011) &
It’s All Yours ‘reissue’ (2014)
This section is the part of the mutual relationship between two parties, they were working together as a synergy but at the end of the section there were some anxiety and chaos caused by the consequences of treating The Nature arbitrarily. The Nature comes to show its power.
Here’s the section where Humans regret for what had occurred in the present and begin to realize that the natural resources are worth to be seized again.
The moment of Mankind are beginning to fight to get The Nature’s attention. Thus the intense tones with slightly faster tempo indicates the persistence of man struggling to make any zero mistakes.
Part 4 [link download]
The part of strife, upheaval and allusions between Mankind and The Nature. The Nature does not just hand over its beliefs, but also pulled off Human tests to which they are able to strive.
Sadness and deep sorrow appeared in this section. The section showed that if Human broke all the vows, The Nature swore to provide them the worst place for humans to live.
A time when Human and Nature reconciled and trust each other.
I have been strictly creating my original compositions based on my idealism with a strong authenticity. My composing method is so much alike while I could never sit in silence while something is unparalleled, asymmetry or not in order.
Yet, ironically I did most of my compositions with drastic movements and uncommon phrases, rich in details and thoughtful complexity. With my indigenous veins of Indonesian culture, I believe I still could bring another taste while I serve my music in foreign countries, this traditional instrument music has a unique treatment that unintentionally come through my works.
The music I served would be a souvenir
that is worth to brought home for
anyone who enjoy the performance.
For me, performing is as important as creating music.
I wasn’t born as a high skilled representative, but I believe I have an energy that I could transfer to the audience while I’m on stage. Being in a place where people accept, acknowledge and appreciate my music is a part of the process of developing.
I will ensure people that each minority artist has their own place where they could be appreciated in any corner of this world, it proves back a lot of doubt and pessimistic thoughts that has spread in our home country that many artist tend to give up even before trying.
I would like to contribute to new environment that I would dedicate something based on my core in the next future to inspire local independent artist and to occupy them with encouragement while pursuing the music career path.
As knowing the fact that there were lots of talented musicians back then that has lost their chances to go abroad because of lack on financing support, I once feel discouraged. But then I was motivated by thinking that my music was simply born in a small rent room and it is now playing worldwide, I thought no reason for me to get by on hesitation. I should make my self big to influence people to become a lot of bigger than I am.
“Tesla Manaf Effendi is a remarkable guitarist and composser by any standard. The fact he is only in his mid-20s and already has three superb solo albums under his belt is the testimony to the meteoric rise by which this status was obtained. Not unlike a host of his young contemporaries, Tesla—as both a player and composer—has a sophistication, depth and acquity one might expect from a person twice his age! With a style that clearly more deeply rooted in Jazz, he has quickly developed a skill set that has vaulted him into the status of an elite guitarist. His advanced harmonic sensibilities shine through in his playing and composing, and his fluid, majestic playing style is equally as mesmerizing as it is impressively organic and heartfelt.”
